Prerequisite: POST certified peace officers only

Course Description: This eight-hour course will focus on the analysis and evaluation of contemporary use of force incidents. Students will review various use of force events captured on video to develop a better understanding as to how the actions of the involved officers were either justified or deemed excessive based on legal, administrative and training guidelines. Supplemental to the use of force analysis, students will also review critical issues relating to police officer liability that include discussions/instruction on negligence, federal civil rights litigation/violations, available defenses, and strategies that can be used by officers to better avoid civil liability relating to high stakes policing activities.

Who Should Attend: Police officers performing line-level enforcement activities, and supervisors tasked with monitoring and overseeing enforcement operations.
