ICE RESCUE TRAINING

Prerequisite: MSHP POST Certified Officers only. The student must have attended Swiftwater Rescue I AND have Swiftwater rescue gear currently issued to him/her.  This gear includes a dry suit, a Swiftwater-rated personal flotation device with a dive knife and strobe light, dive fins, water gloves (thick), wet boots with good soles, and two throw bags in good, serviceable condition.  The student is required to fill out a medical waiver and, if necessary, get a physician’s release to attend this course.  The student will be required to fill out and sign a “Liability Release and Express Assumption of Risk” form and “Statement of Understanding” form at the start of training.  The student must be able to tie the rescue knots used in Swiftwater Rescue I.  The student must be a strong swimmer and be able to swim in icy water while in Swiftwater gear.

Course Description: This course teaches the students the skills necessary to rescue people when ice or cold water is present.  This course will cover the following topics:  Elements of an Ice Rescue, Ice, Victim Assessment, Personnel and Equipment, and Developing an Operational Plan.  The student will receive Ice Rescue certification through Dive Rescue International at the completion of this course.  The practical portion of this course will be held off-site. 

Who Should Attend: Members with waterways in their area that freeze, or could freeze, during the year. 

Tuition/Registration Fees:  None

Course Canellation Policy:  This course may be cancelled if there is no ice, or ice not conducive for training.  Students enrolled in a course that has been cancelled will be given preference to attend the course when it is rescheduled.

Class size:  Limit of 12 students (minimum of 6 students)
