Laboratory History
The MSHP first entered the field of forensic science by starting a crime laboratory in May of 1936. This laboratory
was one of the first in the country. The FBI Laboratory had been in existence for only a few years at that time. For the
entire year of 1939 the laboratory conducted 250 chemical, firearms and microscopic examinations. The laboratory was
first housed in two small rooms of the Broadway Building in Jefferson City, Missouri. In October 1963 the laboratory
moved to 4,000 square feet located in the basement of the new General Headquarters Building. The GHQ crime laboratory
moved into 11,000 square feet located on the second floor of the General Headquarters Annex Building in October 1979. In
December 2002, the Laboratory moved into the remaining area on the Annex second floor - nearly 20,000 square feet of
space.
The Troop G Satellite Laboratory located in Willow Springs, Missouri was opened in the basement of the Troop G Headquarters in February 1975. In September 1997, the staff moved into a new laboratory facility located on the Troop G Headquarters grounds.
The Troop H Satellite Laboratory located on the Troop H Headquarters grounds in St. Joseph, Missouri opened in February 1977. In 1988 an addition to the original laboratory structure nearly doubled the space of the laboratory.
The Troop B Satellite Laboratory located on the Troop B Headquarters grounds in Macon, Missouri opened in February 1977. In 1988 an addition to the original laboratory structure nearly doubled the space of the laboratory.
The Troop C Satellite Laboratory was opened in January 1992. Originally the laboratory had been operated as the Jefferson County Regional Crime Laboratory. It was located at Jefferson County Community College in Hillsboro, Missouri. When the regional laboratory closed, the previous management requested that the MSHP take over the operation of the laboratory. A new laboratory facility located at the Missouri State Highway Patrol Service Center in Park Hills was constructed and the Troop C Laboratory was relocated to this site in April 1999.
The Troop D Satellite Laboratory in Springfield was opened in January 1993. The Springfield Police Department closed its crime laboratory and then requested that the Highway Patrol open a crime laboratory to serve the forensic needs of the City of Springfield and the surrounding counties. The building that houses the Laboratory is the property of Missouri State University. In 2007, construction began of a new lab in Springfield. This new lab will conduct examinations in controlled substances, fingerprints, firearms, toolmarks, DNA, toxicology and trace evidence. The new lab is scheduled to open in late 2008.
The Troop D Satellite Laboratory in Joplin was opened in 1971. Originally the laboratory had been operated as the Missouri Southern Regional Crime Laboratory. It is located at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri. In July 2007 MSHP took over the operation of the laboratory.
The Troop E Satellite Laboratory was opened in 1969. Originally the laboratory had been operated as the Southeast Missouri Regional Crime Laboratory. It is located at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. In July 2006 MSHP took over the operation of the laboratory.
